The same evening Jesus died, a man named Joseph from the town of Arimathea, asked Pilate for permission to bury Jesus’ body. His body was tightly wrapped in a linen covering and was laid in a brand new tomb, one that had been cut into a rock. And because the religious leaders remembered that Jesus said He would return in three days, they placed a massive stone AND soldiers in front of the tomb. They wanted to make sure that no one would take the body to say that Jesus had performed another miracle. If only they knew that NOTHING would be able to stop what was about to happen.
It looked like the end. Isn’t that usually what death is: the end? But the disciples had a choice, they could trust all of the words and teachings and promises of Jesus or they could give up in despair. The disciples had to trust Jesus even when they didn’t understand what He was allowing to happen.
Sometimes things happen to us that we don’t understand. And we have a choice to make. Do we trust that God is in control of ALL things and know that no matter what is happening, we can trust Him to work it out? Or do we get upset and worry, and wonder why things happen? Do we ever try to fix things on our own instead of trusting God to work it all out?
It’s important to remember that even if we can’t see it, or it doesn’t feel like it’s going to happen, God keeps His promises. Just like He kept His promises to the disciples - even when they didn’t see it.
ASK
• How would you have felt if you had been there when Jesus died?
• What would you have done?
• When we don’t understand what Jesus is doing in our lives, why should we trust Him?
• What are some things we can do to help us trust Him?
PRAY
Lord God, You are faithful. You keep Your promises. You have never left us and You never will. Teach us to trust You in the good times and the bad. Help us remember that our hope is in You. And remind us to share Your promises for our hope and our future with everyone. Amen.
